Galen Burrows Photo<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the last nine months, WestJet pilots have been trying to negotiate higher wages, more flexible schedules, and better job security. ALPA &#8212; which represents more than 74,000 pilots at 40 airlines in Canada and the U.S. &#8212; had repeatedly suggested that Canadian pilots earn roughly half of what pilots in the U.S. earn, and was fighting for a \u201cNorth American industry-standard contract.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WestJet management, however, said those wage expectations were \u201cunreasonable,\u201d and \u201cif realized would permanently damage the financial viability of the group&#8217;s future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The terms of the tentative agreement between WestJet and ALPA are not clear, but ALPA said in a statement that its WestJet leaders \u201cbelieve this contract delivers on the goals of better job security, enhanced compensation, and more flexible schedules to allow for a better work\/life balance \u2014 consistent with collective agreements other ALPA-represented pilot groups are signing with their employers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The union noted that WestJet pilots had their first arbitrated contract \u201cforced upon them in 2018,\u201d and since then have \u201cfallen even further behind their North American counterparts with regard to critical contract provisions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During negotiations in recent months, Capt Bernard Lewall, chair of the WestJet ALPA Master Executive Council, continued to emphasize that WestJet has pilot attraction and retention issues, and that the airline is \u201chemorrhaging pilots at the rate of over 30 per month.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I started at WestJet 18 years ago, it was seen as a career destination,\u201d shared Lewall. \u201cFor the past several years, we have unfortunately been nothing more than a training ground for pilots looking to leave for better opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/assets.skiesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/347245377_775016814257536_7924152331818891161_n-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-348550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets.skiesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/347245377_775016814257536_7924152331818891161_n-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/assets.skiesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/347245377_775016814257536_7924152331818891161_n-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/assets.skiesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/347245377_775016814257536_7924152331818891161_n-150x200.jpg 150w, https:\/\/assets.skiesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/347245377_775016814257536_7924152331818891161_n-400x533.jpg 400w, https:\/\/assets.skiesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/347245377_775016814257536_7924152331818891161_n-750x1000.jpg 750w, https:\/\/assets.skiesmag.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/347245377_775016814257536_7924152331818891161_n.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">WestJet management and pilot leaders with ALPA have reached a tentative deal.
