{"id":359162,"date":"2024-10-18T13:16:19","date_gmt":"2024-10-18T17:16:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/skiesmag.com\/?post_type=news&#038;p=359162"},"modified":"2024-10-18T13:16:21","modified_gmt":"2024-10-18T17:16:21","slug":"the-faa-is-opening-a-new-review-of-safety-at-boeing","status":"publish","type":"news","link":"https:\/\/skiesmag.com\/news\/the-faa-is-opening-a-new-review-of-safety-at-boeing\/","title":{"rendered":"The FAA is opening a new review of safety at\u00a0Boeing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>WASHINGTON (AP) \u2014 The Federal Aviation Administration said Friday it will open a three-month review of Boeing\u2019s compliance with safety regulations, continuing the&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-setback-test-flight-pilot-seats-057f9ba72932448fc6aec40efdcb7a3b\">agency\u2019s closer oversight<\/a>&nbsp;of the company since&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-strike-manufacturing-reputation-3eed69b839021b24bfe792080c85b63c\">a panel blew off<\/a>&nbsp;a jetliner during an Alaska Airlines flight in January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/federal-aviation-administration\">The FAA<\/a>&nbsp;said its review will examine key areas of safety processes&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-layoffs-strike-airplane-factories-de637999cf525699577b42b72bff2a70\">at&nbsp;Boeing<\/a>&nbsp;to make sure that they \u201cresult in timely, accurate safety-related information for FAA use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An FAA spokesperson said the review was not triggered by any particular event or concern but rather is part of the FAA\u2019s oversight of&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/faa-inspections-aircraft-companies-safety-1cb53f061f7df2f9a45262300a4353a3\">safety culture<\/a>&nbsp;at the huge aircraft maker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boeing&nbsp;did not comment immediately on the new review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/faa-administrator-boeing-737-max-senate-4e58c2b21980b34bc72cde7779925fe1\">FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker<\/a>&nbsp;has ordered special audits of&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;and other steps to examine the safety culture at&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;since a panel called a door plug blew off a 737 Max during the Alaska Airlines flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the inspector general of the Transportation Department, FAA\u2019s parent agency, said last week that&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oig.dot.gov\/library-item\/46466\">weaknesses in FAA oversight<\/a>&nbsp;are limiting its ability to find and fix problems at&nbsp;Boeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The auditor said FAA has failed to ensure that&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;and its suppliers make parts that meet engineering and design requirements and to investigate claims that&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/boeing-whistleblowers-safety-senate-hearings-f8354ddddc6372e3337cd74b9ea264e3\">puts improper pressure<\/a>&nbsp;on employees who are authorized to conduct safety inspections. The FAA has closed only 14 of 34 reports of undue pressure, with the others remaining open for more than a year on average, according to the report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, the National Transportation Safety Board issued an&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ntsb-boeing-max-rudder-pedals-recommendations-0c66455ef09fb31afd34596085e65522\">\u201curgent\u201d recommendation to FAA<\/a>&nbsp;about a problem that surfaced in February with rudders that pilots use to steer certain&nbsp;Boeing&nbsp;737s after landing.
